I was reading TechCrunch today, and came across this article about a presentation Netflix put together for its employees about the corporate philosophy.  It’s a bit long, but very worth it.

I’ll summarize some of the things I found interesting:

  • They have a very well defined set of values that they look for in employees, and that employees can work on to become more valuable to the company
  • They lay off mediocre employees using the manager test:  If your manager found out you were leaving for another firm, how hard would the manager work to keep you?  Unless it’s really hard, you get a nice severance package
  • They give their employees freedom to act in Netflix’s best interest
  • Good Process vs. Bad Process:  Good process helps talented people get more done, bad process prevents recoverable mistakes
  • One outstanding employee gets more done and costs less than two adequate employees
